Knoppix 5.3, after pausing for a year, was presented at CeBIT, in Hannover, Germany. Our colleagues were there, and got the DVD live-edition that's available with the German c't magazine during the event. The Open Source Audio-Desktop ADRIANE which is a part of the live distro was presented by Adriane and Klaus Knopper at CeBIT

The Live DVD we had was predominantly in German, but it can be changed in English by typing at the boot screen knoppix lang=us followed by your favorite desktop environment, or hit Enter for the default one: KDE 3.5.8. However, the KDE 3.5 desktop doesn't change to English, you will have to go in the KDE Control Center -> Regional and Accessibility -> Country/Region and Language, select US-English, hit Apply and then log out. The system will automatically re-login and voila! Write Comment (0 comments) |

LCD TVs outsell all other flat-panel HDTV sets by a huge margin, but the image quality from the new Pioneer KURO PDP-5020FD ($4,000 list) plasma may just give the competition a run for its money. The 50-inch set delivers the best picture contrast of any HDTV currently available, and its range of color reproduction and consistent color accuracy are a perfect match for today's highest-quality HD video material. It also incorporates some of the most comprehensive multimedia file support that I've ever seen in any HDTV, and given that it's also Pioneer's least expensive 1080p plasma, it's a shoo-in for our Editors' Choice award.

Q. Following the advice of my first computer guru many years ago, I have my hard drives partitioned like so: C:\Operating System; D:\Data; E:\Programs; F:\Free Space for future allocation.
The rationale: When the operating system goes crazy, just reformat C: and reinstall. Data remains in place and programs are all lined up in E: for reinstalling. And why should I want my "bits" floating around 250GB of hard drive space when I'm using less than 50GB?
Now my young neighbor (who lives and breathes computers) advises, "Enter the twenty-first century. Partitioning is unnecessary and counterproductive. It fragments the virtual memory and slows your computer." What say you? To partition or not to partition: That is the question.—Jim Bergmann Write Comment (0 comments) |

They harvest data about you, your family, your friends, and your work directly from the Web apps you use and the sites you visit. Here's how they do it.
It's all become so easy. I used to write viruses and attack networks to show off how smart I am, but these days it isn't even a challenge: There are millions of you out there who don't run any security at all at home. The hard part is finding you—but then, I don't really care about you. I care about your identity and your data. You've even gone out of your way to make it easier for me with this latest push towards cloud computing, especially social networking, SaaS (software as a service— all those neat Web 2.0 apps), and online storage. Now I don't even have to find you at home; I can focus my energy on a few popular services and still get what I want. I harvest information (data) about you, your family, your friends, and your work directly from the Internet applications you use and the Web sites you visit. Let me tell you about my day.Write Comment (0 comments) |
